Cleaning and Scrapping

I got the guest room cleaned out today in preparation for company this weekend.  It was kind of a cluttered mess since we sold our camp trailer and had to empty everything out of it and put it in that room.  It's looking pretty good now, most of it fit in the closet with just two bins against the wall.

I had received an email from Sean's cousin about a year ago about his Grandpa Smith's store.  I wanted to get it on a scrapbook page so after further research, I was able to get an oil painting picture of the store from the same cousin and a picture just a couple of weeks ago from Sean's mom of him in the store.  I put it all together to make this page for Sean and for my boys books.

Here is how the article reads:

The Unique Charm of Frank

As I walked into Frank’s Food Town in Draper, sometime in the early 1980’s, I asked for a pound of hamburger. I was told by Frank Smith, the owner:

“Get out! Go somewhere else. We don’t sell hamburger here. Go down the street to one of our competitors. All we have is ‘ground steak.’ Just look at this certificate from the Utah Department of Health. It says we consistently have the ‘lowest percentage of fat in our ground steak of any institution in the country.’ Hamburger, humph!”
I started walking out of the door, dazed and confused. Frank’s son Lynn felt my pain and explained his dad did that for effect (just to newcomers) and invited me to return soon. I never dared ask for hamburger again. And I did return time and time again to shop at Frank’s Food Town.
My memories of the store invoke images of wood floors, fresh fruit and vegetables and the roasted chickens at the meat counter, especially prepared by Frank himself. You could order a steak as thick as you would like. The roasts were fresh and tasty. There was a wonderful aroma in the store.

The store was a unique haven of personality and service with the image of Hometown, USA stamped all it. One day, I was writing a check to purchase my ‘ground steak,’ and I produced my driver’s license for identification. Lynn’s wife said: “What’s that for? We believe you are who you say you are.” I was hooked, cooked, stick a fork in me done! They had my business forever after that.

The building was located on 9th East and 12300 South, and was a unique design that wrapped around the northwest corner. The downstairs was once the headquarters for a boxing club. Frank’s remained in business as long as possible, until the big box grocery stores came into town and undercut the lower volume prices of the Food Town. So much was lost in the hallowed name of competition. Businesses, like people, have different seasons of their existence. The story of this business, and especially the people who ran it, are an important part of Draper’s history, not to be forgotten. (Article submitted by: Rob Perry)

I Love A Parade

Well, not really, but I tolerate them.  The boys like them though and we even got Sean to come for the last two years.  I think it helps that Grandpa Nielsen is an announcer which means the following:
We don't have to save places with chairs and blankets starting 3 days before the parade
We don't even have to get there early to get a good seat
We get to sit in the shade
We get to see all the performances becase we are in the announcer booth and that is where everyone stops to perform
We get lots of candy thrown at us because EVERYONE knows grandpa LaMarr

Tyrel's friend Tyler hung out with us for the day.  We went to the parade, then Sean, Travis, Trevin and I came home to chill for a while.  Tyrel and Tyler went to the carnival and decided it was lame so they walked to Grandpa and Grandma's house and started shucking corn.  Tyler had never been to the Onion Days parade before and he has also never shucked corn before.  Wow, we are giving him all kinds of new experiences.
The BBQ was yummy and it was another fun day of visiting with family and playing with cousins.

Blessing Day

We got to go to Salt Lake for the blessing of our newest little niece today.   Sean's sister and her husband had their third little girl in June and she was blessed today.  She was so beautiful in her blessing dress made by Sean's mom.   It was a great blessing and we had fun visiting with family.  Her name is by that long ribbon on the real page, but I took it off for posting here.

There was all kinds of salads, rolls, brownies and peanut butter bars.  It was all so good although Travis thought there was something wrong with not having meat with a meal.  My little carnivore.  Someday, he will learn to like salads.  I should have taken a picture of his plate.  He came out of the line with a roll and two peanut butter bars and a cup of water.  My plate on the other hand, was overflowing with all kinds of yummy stuff.  There was this most yummy salad that had mixed greens, strawberries, toasted candied almonds and feta cheese (I think) with this yummy poppy seed vinagrette to go on it. The potato salad and broccoli salad were also SOOO good.  The rolls and the peanut butter bars were to die for!  I ate way too much of all of it!

End of Summer Party

It was a pretty busy day.  I found out that I made it through for the final week of Designer Survivor. I actually can't believe I've made it this far.  It started out with 70 people and is now down to the final week with 5 of us.  I have to make my kit based on this bedroom set from The Pottery Barn catalog.

So, I spent some time on it this morning, then had Sean drive me out to Goshen to a house he sprayed last week because I needed to make a frame for my kit out of white siding that the paint is peeling off and he knew where to find one.

I finished getting my house chores done.  Tyrel went down and hung out at the carnival with the Millers.  We went grocery shopping and then I had to make a salad and dessert for the Jones' End of Summer party and Jam Session.

We watched the first half of the BYU game, went to the party for a while, then came home and watched the end of the BYU game.  They won!!  I'm so excited for football season again!

This is the recipe for the Lemon Bars I made for Lisa's baby shower that everyone wanted.

1 c. softened butter
1/2 c. powdered sugar
2 c. flour

Mix well and press into a 9 x 13 pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.
Bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

5-6 T lemon juice
4 beaten eggs
1 tsp baking powder
2 c. sugar
7 tsp. flour

Mix together and pour over crust. Bake 20-30 minutes at 350 degrees.
Sprinkle top with powdered sugar.
Cut into squares and serve when cooled.

In other news, Trevin started football practice today.  Wade is his coach and Josh and Harrison are on his team.  They are the Raiders this year and he can't wait until games start.

Wipe Out

Trevin and I have a standing date every Tuesday night at 7:00 to watch Wipe Out.   Travis and Tyrel have YM that night, so it works out well for us.  He loves it and I love to just sit and listen to him giggle and say "Oh Man!"  He is so funny.  We will have to think of something new for our dates though because I think it is only on in the summer.

A few Saturday's ago, when he was supposed to be doing his chores, I walk by his room and he says, "Mom come see if you can guess what this is!"  So I walk in and find one of the Wipe Out zones.  Hopefully you have seen this show, or you will have no idea what this is.  He even had people off, falling off, made it to safety, not even started, and in the middle of the zone.  The black box hanging by the chain is the wrecking ball that is on there sometimes.  SO CUTE!
