Layout from yesterday's Photoshop 101 class

I did a layout from the pictures I took yesterday at our little Photography class.  I think it turned out awesome if I don't say so myself.

We had an awesome lesson by President Newman today in Sunday School.  It was the 2nd half of the Sermon on the Mount lesson that we started last week.  Today we mostly discussed forgiveness and repentance and the Atonement and how they all work in our lives.  The discussion was very good.

It reminded me a lot of the talk I gave on the Atonement a couple of years ago.  It was good to have those things brought back to remembrance again.

A couple of the scriptures we discussed were D&C 64:9-10
9 - Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin.
10 - I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men.

We also talked a lot about forgiveness from Matthew 6 in the New Testament.

These are the notes I took about the discussion we had - It doesn't matter what it was, we HAVE to forgive them in order to fully partake of the Atonement.  Even if the person who wronged us or hurt our feelings or sinned against us hasn't repented or shown remorse, it is still required that we forgive them. or we are under the greater condemnation.

What I learned today..............

My sister Heidi and I did a digital scrapbooking workshop today at my ward.  We had about twice as many people as we originally anticiptated showing up for it.  There was quite a bit of interest.  It was fun but really hard to teach very much with only 3 hours.  I'm sure many of them left frustrated and lost, but don't give up ladies!  It just takes practice.  We are hoping to get a little group together to meet once a month to help each other along.  I think it will be fun!  It will make us get some scrapping done and keep it fresh in our minds.

Then, we had lunch.  Yummy soups!  Thanks everyone who brought some.

Then we had a photography 101 class from Ashley Taylor, our ward resident photographer and this is what I learned
F-Stop
ISO
White Balance
and what it means to open up all the way, blow out the sky and a bunch of other stuff too!  It was so fun!  We had awesome models from our ward and these are two of my favorite shots I did.

The thing I didn't learn was how am I supposed to get my boys to cooperate like these girls did for a photo shoot? That is the big mystery.

Cub Scouts

Well, I'm going through co-Scout leaders like crazy.  #2 down and ready and waiting for #3.  I didn't know I was so difficult to work with!  Just kidding, the last one moved a few blocks and is now no longer in our ward!  Have fun with them 5th ward!

My Scout den is full of energy!  It isn't so bad, because there are only 4 of them, they are all actually pretty fun to be around.  Very different personalities though.  It is interesting.  Two meetings ago, we worked on our Indian Lore achievements.  They made paper bag Indian vests and wrote a story in Indian picture drawings on them.  I should have taken a picture of their backs because only one of them wrote on the front.

Last week, we had them practice the skit they were doing for the Blue and Gold Banquet and this week was the actual banquet.  They did pretty good on their skit, but they kept turning around and weren't facing the audience, so I don't know if anyone heard them or not.
The gist of their skit was, they were going on a hike, one of the Scouts stops and yells, “I think I’m

having a heart attack!” then falls to the ground. The other Scouts start rescue breathing and chest compressions to save him. The one that is doing chest compressions says, “I’m getting tired, maybe we should switch,” then they all get up and rotate spots, including the one that was having the heart attack. When I first read through it, I didn’t get it, I thought only the ones doing the saving were switching, but it was much funnier when the one having the heart attack switched too. They all wanted a turn, so all four of them ended up having a heart attack. Then at the end, (they added this on themselves) they all stood up and said. “Oh no! I think I’m having a heart attack!” and then all fell to the ground. They were pretty cute!.

The Fudginator

We had our annual Ward Blue and Gold Banquet tonight.  Trevin made a cake for the cake auction.  Supplies were limited by the time I found out he had to make a cake, so we went with what was on hand.  He had fun making it and he won the award "The Fudginator" for his cake.  He thinks it looks like a giant chocolate donut with sprinkles.  There were some fun cakes this year.  The dinner was good, the Scouts did great with their skits, we didn't win the cake we really wanted, but we did end up with one.

In addition...

.....to the post Sunday about serving and being the answer to other's prayers, I saw this great quote on Facebook today and thought I'd share.

"In the end, the number of prayers we say may contribute to our happiness, but the number of prayers we answer may be of even greater importance." - President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Isn't that a great quote!

Fat Cats

Several months ago, we bought a GROUPON coupon for Fat Cats.  It was like WAYYYYY cheap for 2 hours of bowling, 2 pitchers of soda, a large pizza and breadsticks.  We finally used it on Monday for family night and had a blast!  Maybe I just say that because I WON round 2!  We were able to get in 3 full games of bowling.  Tyrel won the first and last round and mom unexpectedly won round 2.  Yes, that would be me, the mom.  I'm not proud or anything.  Really our scores were pretty close and it was anybody's game all the way to the end of each round.

I love hanging out with my boys!

Service Lesson

Liz gave yet another great lesson in Relief Society today.  The lesson was on service.  She gave us all cards to write who we were going to serve this week.  I have mine written down and it is something I've been going to do for about a month now.  So, now that I have it written down, I'm definitely going to do it this week.  Here are a couple of other things I wrote on my paper that she mentioned in the lesson.

"WE are the way that Heavenly Father answers the prayers of others."

Why does the Lord have us serve?  Because He can't be here to take care of us Himself, it is through others that He takes care of us.

I didn't mention this story in class, but it reminded me of when Trevin was a baby.  It was the Saturday before we were blessing him in church, we had company coming and I ended up getting mastitis.  Not fun.  I was achy, chilled, running a fever and had all the preparations to make for people coming and dinner after the blessing.  Both of my brothers were coming on Saturday and staying over and I had no idea what I was going to make for dinner.  Right about the time I was ready to burst into tears, the doorbell rang.  Maxyne Haskell stood at the door with a giant family sized Stouffers Lasagne, salad, french bread and something for dessert that I can't remember.  She was apologizing that it had taken her so long to get over with a meal and she was feeling bad that he was almost 2 months old and she was barely bringing us dinner.  But, I knew why it took her so long..... until that day, I hadn't needed help with dinner, that was the day I needed it the most and that was the day Heavenly Father sent someone to help me.  Thanks Maxyne!

Thanks Liz for the great lesson and the kick in the pants to get me to write about that great act of service and helping me recognize the tender mercies we recieve from our loving Father in Heaven!

My Valentine

Happy Valentine's to my sweetheart.  It has been 20 wonderful years and I don't know what I'd do without you.  Thanks for loving me!

Game On

Trevin had a basketball game this morning.  They won!  They were trailing 10-2 at the end of the first quarter and we were getting a little worried, but they came back and did really well and ended up winning with a final score of 26-30.  His team has done really well this year, they have only lost one game and they lost it in overtime.

Trevin's Valentines

Well, I think this is the last year we will need to make Valentine's.  I totally stole this idea from Summer Driggs blog, I thought it was too cute and Trevin liked it, so we went with it.  Super easy and they are all done except Tootsie Pops only come 19 in a bag?  Where did they come up with such a strange number?  Now we have to go buy another bag to get the last 4 invitations.  I was hoping Trevin had some suckers left over from Halloween, but no such luck.

Superbowl Party

We were sad the Steelers lost, but we did have a fun party.  Todd and Haylee and their boys came so I got a little bit of snuggle time with the baby and newest football fan, but I had to fight over him with Sharlynn and Traci.  Grandpa Nielsen also made it up for the festivities.  We had BBQ beef sandwiches because I could get it ready beforehand and have it in the crock pot and ready to go.  Haylee and Traci and Grandpa brought salads.  Sharlynn brought vegetable trays.  We had a few sweets too, but tried to keep it healthy as much as we could.  Trevin and Tyrel were a little worried about having to go to school tomorrow with their team loss, but I'm sure they'll survive.

Quilting with Cameo

Sister Johnson gave an awesome lesson today in Relief Society.  She had a bunch of hand pieced quilts as her display and lucky for me, Sister Gunnell typed up the synopsis of the class and emailed it out to everyone so she said I could just copy an paste it here on my blog.  Very good lesson!

Cameo displayed six quilts and an old ironing board... She also passed out little baggies with quilted pieces and seam rippers for sisters to unpick some quilted squares while she taught the lesson.

She began the lesson by sharing and explaining a star quilt she began some 15 years ago, but lost track of somewhere in a box over time and several moves. She found that quilt recently and continued where she had left off those many years ago. Then she taught us some of the things she thought about as she quilted... I will not do her lesson justice, but do want to at least share some of the points I remember.

In no particular order I will recall what I can from Cameo's fantastic lesson...

Our lives are like a quilt... they take time and are detailed and we make mistakes along the way. The squares need to be put together correctly or the quilt will not work. She held up many attempted squares throughout her lesson that represented different things like the two cute little ones she tried to do by memory without the directions. She said they were cute, but wrong. As much as she tried to remember she really needed the directions and once she found those directions she was able to recall the correct way to place and sew them. Just like we need the scriptures. We need to read not just go on our memories.

When we do make mistakes we can unpick the stitches with a seam ripper, just like when we sin we can repent. Those seam rippers are a quilter's best friend. Repentance too is a very important part of the plan.

She held up what appeared to be a perfect square, but said it was very wrong and was not going in the quilt. To our eyes it looked fine, but she knew it was wrong. Like our lives, often only we know what we are doing is wrong, but no one else knows.

Cameo showed us a quilt she started for Carly when she was just a little girl... Yet another quilt that took way longer than she had hoped, it too landed in a box and was finished years later when she finally added the binding (the only part left to finish). Carly had picked the colors as a child, but by the time Cameo finished it ~ Carly wasn't interested anymore. Let's not do the same in our lives and take too long on any given thing of importance.
Another quilt was one she and her daughter Anne worked on together for Carly. This one went much faster and like in life they got to work together to accomplish a great thing. Also, she realized while making that quilt that the pleated squares needed a stabilizing backing in order to work properly in the quilt. Sometimes we need that extra support as well.

She showed us a purple quilt that she finished in a timely manner and they were able to enjoy for many years. Unlike the others where she got distracted and was not able to enjoy.
Her sewing machine is very important to her because it is the tool she uses to sew her quilts, but if she isn't careful it fills up with lint and/or needs to be maintained, the lint cleaned out, oiled. She even needs to listen for the bobbin or it runs out of thread and she needs to redo her work. How many times do our lives fill up with lint and we need to clean it out. Like the bobbin, we need to maintain the often unseen spiritual parts of our lives. We need to listen so we can hear the spirit and not have to back track.

She loves her old sturdy ironing board she got from her grandmother. It survived the Mt. Pleasant flood! Covered with mud it was cleaned by her grandmother and to this day helps Cameo make her quilts.

An very old quilt that was entirely hand quilted and belonged to Mike's family compared to another old hand quilted one picked up at a antique shop. Each very similar, but so very different. One handed down and remembered by family... one given up and forgotten by the quilter's family...

She talked about needing to find someone you can trust to machine quilt something you put so much time and effort into. You don't want to just hand it off to anyone. We too need to trust in the Savior to help us finish our lives properly.

Cameo covered so many things in so many analogies... Scriptures, Repentance, Geneology, Temple Work, Self Worth, Not Judging, and of course our Savior, the list goes on.

Oh, and those squares the sisters helped unpick at during the lesson? Those were squares Cameo had done incorrectly and needed to redo, but because she had help she will be able to move on with that quilt and get it done.

All the quilts were made up of completely different colors. All the colors were beautiful as they were grouped together in a single quilt, but some of the colors would not have worked very well in another quilt because the colors would have clashed.

Analogy: There is a time and place for everything we do in our lives. We shouldn't run faster than we have strength or take on more than we can handle at one time. It's okay to say "no" sometimes.

All the quilts were different. If I tried to make another one just exactly as I done another one, I would not be able to duplicate it. It would actually be quite boring to try to do another quilt exactly the same way and with the same colors as previously done.

Analogy: We are all different. We can't be duplicated because we are so unique. That is the way God planned it. So, we should not compare ourselves to others because there is no comparison. We each have our own important mission to fulfill in this life, so be yourself!

I am sure each woman in that room got something personal out of that lesson. I know I did. I am sure Cameo is way too busy to share it again, but if anyone else remembers anything I didn't mention, please share.

Each week we get to hear a great lesson prepared by a sister who put much time, thought and prayer into the message.

February date with Tyrel

Tyrel wanted to get in some driving time for our date this week.  He took me to lunch at Burger King and then he drove from Salem to Payson to take me to the grocery store to buy stuff for our Superbowl party on Sunday.  He does a really good job driving and is very conscientious like Travis is.  Hopefully he is the same way when driving with friends too.

We are all stocked up with stuff for the party tomorrow, just need to get stuff put together, cooked, and organized.

Retirement Party - Take 2

What a busy day!  Besides all the normal things we do in a day, Sean and I went to lunch and took some stuff into Jeff to get framed, then headed over to Trevin's school for his NOVA (Nurturing Opportunities, Values and Accountability) graduation.  This program took the place of  DARE (I think) and instead of just the drugs and alcohol stuff that the police officer talks with them about, they also talk about bullying, strangers, and also incorporating good values in your life.  It encompasses more and I think it is a pretty good program.  Each child writes a "constitution" at the end of the program and then the teachers pick a boy and a girl from each class to read their constitution at the graduation.  The kids sang a couple of songs and Trevin was pretty excited because he got to be the "Sound Guy" and even got special mention from Mr. Applegate at the end of the program.

I texted the other two boys on our way down because we just found out this morning that Grandpa Nielsen is leaving Freedom Academy and they were throwing him a party this afternoon, so we left quickly when the program was over, picked up Travis and Tyrel at their school and headed to Provo to Grandpa's party.  He has really loved his job there!

After that was over, we headed to 7 Peaks to get our pictures taken for our Pass of all Passes and then stopped and picked up pizza's on the way home for dinner.  Grandpa came up for dinner and to visit for a couple hours.  Grandma is in California at Kristi's this week helping her after her surgery.

January Triple Date

We didn't get our goals for this year set until later in the month and so I didn't re-set my date with the boys goal until then.  Since we were running short on days in the month and since I had a $20 gift card to Amazon from the mess up with the 3rd party company selling through them for the boys Christmas gift fiasco, I bought Eclipse for myself and we had a group date and all watched it.  My boys didn't want their friends to know they watched it and thought it was intense in parts, so don't tell.
