Memorial Day activities

What a fun but busy day we had today!  I think we are all pretty much exhausted.

We got the yard ready and Sean and Tyrel put the finishing touches on the fence this morning (we are one panel short).  We finished getting the house cleaned up, made a last minute run to the grocery store, then got the BBQ grill and patio furniture cleaned up and shiny.  After lunch, the boys set up the badminton net and played and played.  We all finished tilling the garden and got it all planted then started grilling chicken for the dutch oven dinner.  We did SWAT team chicken so it had to be seared on the grill first before putting it in the dutch oven.

The boys played hard and then when all the cousins showed up, they played even harder.  I think everyone had fun.  We missed Carolyn's family as Makayla was sick, but Cameron got to come.  During the family picnic we had fun visiting, running the kids around on the golf cart, ate some good food, and watched the boys play badminton while the girls jumped on the trampoline.

After dinner, most of us headed down to Bernice's viewing.  It was good to catch up with friends we haven't seen in a while but wish it was under different circumstances.  At least she isn't suffering anymore.  I'm sure it is better where she is now.

I'm grateful for enough hours in the day to get all that done

Travis' Friends

I have 12 teenage boys at my house tonight having a brawl tournament and overflowing the hot tub.  Enough said.

School's Out and Graduation Photos

Well, today was the last day of school (1/2 day).  Still seems so weird to me that it is summer vacation since it has been so cold lately.  Now I need to get our summer schedule figured out.  Travis and Tyrel are going to Youth Conference next week.  Then Trevin has scout camp and we have a family reunion this month also, so June will be busy.  I need to get Trevin signed up for swimming lessons also.  We'll try to shoot for August for that I think.  Maybe it will be warm by then.

My father in law had me take pictures at the 8th grade graduation at his school tonight.  It would have been more fun if I didn't have parents and little kids jumping in my path throughout the night.  Hopefully I got good ones of the people that paid for pictures anyway.  I guess I'll spend my day tomorrow editing and posting pictures.

Another Slow Day

Tyrel stayed home today from school.  It was field day and he didn't really want to go.  A bunch of the Jr. High kids were having a party at the Elk Ridge park at noon and he wanted to go to that instead.  He said it was lots of fun and tons of kids were there.

Travis drove to school today.  He was pretty excited to do so.  He drove Tyrel and himself to the movie to see Iron Man 2 this afternoon and then drove Tyrel to his scouting activity this evening and took the car to his activity.  He thinks he is so cool now.  Tyrel said Travis did a really good job driving in town.  I think this new found freedom will give me ulcers.  I liked it better when I knew they were with adults taking them everywhere.  They are growing up too fast.

I spend the day working on an ad for a business that paid me to do their artwork.

We had breakfast for dinner and then watched the American Idol finale.  Lee ended up winning and the boys were so excited!

Tomorrow is the last day of school for everyone!  Half day actually.  I can't believe it is summer vacation.  Didn't it snow just a couple days ago?

Not Much

Not much going on today.  Travis stayed home because it was graduation so the rest of the school didn't have classes.  He was begging me to go to the store because he was bored.  His friend Darren came up later in the day to hang out.

Heidi and I had a new kit release today.  It was made specifically for one person and is a horse racing kit.  Not sure how it will sell because it is a pretty specific theme.  But then I haven't seen any kits with the same theme anywhere, so maybe it will sell good!

I met with Kelly to register the cub scouts for Day Camp and get the next few meetings planned.

We watched American Idol after dinner and that was about all.  We are all hoping Lee wins although I think Crystal is the better singer, I just like Lee's style better.

Finally! - May Date with Travis

After passing all his requirements,I checked Travis out of school early on Monday and we had our May date.  He drove us over to Provo to the Drivers License office and after only waiting about 5 minutes, we got his license.  He still has to wait 4 weeks for the real one to come in the mail, but he is excited he gets to drive by himself now.  We went out for shakes afterwards and then he ran me to WalMart, Payson Market, the frame shop, then to Grandma Nielsen's.  After that we picked Tyrel up from school and came home.  He is excited to get to drive to school the last couple days.  He bought new seat covers and a steering wheel cover for it and had me cut out a vinyl Batman logo to put in the back window.  He also bought a converter that plugs into the tape player in the car so he can plug it into his iPod. 

We had a great time driving around and chatting all afternoon.  I think he got in a 3 or 4 hour date with mom!

Buckets of Tears

Trevin woke up yesterday morning (1/2 hour before he is supposed to get on the bus) and says, "Oh, mom, I forgot to tell you, today is the 5th grade talent show at 12:30."  I'm not too concerned since he hasn't been practicing a talent so I say, "That's nice, but I don't have to be there if you aren't in it right?"

"But I am in it," he states.

So, I ask him what he is doing, he says he is lip syncing.  I ask what song, he says the song from Horton Hears A Who. (I Can't Fight This Feeling by REO Speedwagon)  Undoubtedly one of the best songs from my era, but definitely not what I imagined him picking.  So, I ask him if he knows it and why he hasn't been practicing all the while thinking, "Is lip syncing a talent?"  He says he has it on his playlist and has been practicing, so I hit play and tell him to show me.  He knows like one word from each line and is just standing there looking bored with his hands at his side.  Before we even hit the chorus, I nix the idea.  Hence starting the buckets of tears.  He thinks I am picking on him, I think I'm sparing him embarassment.

After I get him calmed down, I ask if there is a song he knows all the words to that is a little more upbeat.  He says, 'What I've Done by Linkin Park."  So, I hit play on his playlist and tell him to sing.  He does know all the words but is still standing there like a sad little puppy dog. I ask if that is all he's going to do (more buckets needed here).  I explain again, that I'm not picking on him, just trying to help him figure this out.  So I send him downstairs for a CD to burn, I download the song and start praying that the school has the ability to play the song in MP3 format.

When he gets back, I ask if he knows if the school can play it, he doesn't know.  I ask him if he wants to take Trav's electric guitar to pretend like he is playing, can't find it, (running out of tissues and time at this point).

So, we settle for jeans with holes in the knees (in great abundance at this time of the year anyway) some sunglasses, and the guitar from the Guitar Hero game.

So, at 12:30, I go to the school, find a comfy seat by my friends, get the camera ready, watch multi talented gymnasts, piano players, dancers, and singers.  Trevin is up about half way through.  They put in his CD, and...................nothing.  I go over and tell the lady doing the techie stuff that it is in MP3 format and she says it should work, eventually it does.

He did an awesome job rocking out, tried to throw the guitar around his neck/shoulder and almosts strangled himself and got all his little friends in the audience rocking out.  I guess it turned out to be a success even though it stressed me out.  He wasn't the only lip sync-er, so alls well that ends well.

In other news today, Father and Son's outing was cancelled because the reserved spot is still gated off because of snow.  Gotta love global warming.

I got up at 7:00 a.m. to do a fun speed scrap.

The house is clean and the laundry is done!

Scrap Night

I went scrapping with my neighborhood friends last night.  I really love it!  It is one of my favorite activities!  We didn't have any special challenge, just decided to work on whatever we needed to work on.  I did a layout of Sean and I on our date a few weeks ago when the boys were at grandma's for the weekend, and then I did these two layouts of my cute nieces.  I think they turned out adorable!  Thanks for the cute pics to work with.

Sean and I went on our date tonight since he was busy with work during the day then we stopped by his parents to visit for a minute only to find half of the family there.  It was fun to sit and reminisce.  I went to Trevin's 5th grade talent show today during the day and worked on getting our huge mega monstrous kit in the store.  It took me forever!  I'll give the details of the talent show tomorrow.

Layouts from our photo shoot

Remember a few weeks ago when we did the photo shoot at the railroad tracks to get pictures for my Mother's Day projects?  Well, I finally got the layouts done.  I used this fun photoshop action called Blue WooHoo that makes all the blue colors pop and then used a photo mask from Coffee Shop Photography to make them look rough around the edges. 

I did a speed scrap today and finished off the last of the three, so decided to post them all.  They were all done at different speed scraps with different instructions, but I used the same kit for all of them.

Travis passed had his last day of driving today and now he has his certificate to get his official driver's license.  I can't believe it.  Tyrel will be taking the test for his learner's permit anytime now too.

I'm going scrapping with my friends tonight at Janice's and I'm so excited!

Teenagers.....

Travis had his 2nd day of road testing today for Drivers Ed and he passed everything off.  His partner wasn't so lucky......
I wish passing everything off means he didn't have to go tomorrow, but no such luck.  Pretty soon, he will be able to run errands for me, so that will be awesome!

I was just thinking this morning about how everyone always wishes away the different stages their kids are in, and lots of people really don't like teenagers at all.  My hardest stage was when they were tiny babies, I liked them much better when they had a little personality, but I have really enjoyed all the stages my kids have been through and I have totally LOVED the teenage years, so far......

I have great boys that make good decisions and I love them.  They aren't afraid to talk with Sean and I about things, they aren't sassy, they are kind to each other and show respect to us as their parents, they do what they are asked and only complain a little bit.  LOL!  I have had a blast this year going on dates each month with all of them.  It has been fun especially to talk with them and have some good open and honest conversations.

More Layouts - More cute nephews

I got this new kit called Fresh and thought the colors looked great with Kaiden's shirt, so I did one layout and then couldn't stop.  The kit didn't really match what Carter had on, so I had to recolor a few things to get it how I wanted it to look.

I'm loving this new creative team I'm on, her kits are so fun!

I got lots of scrapping done today.  In addition to these I did all the layouts for my date with Tyrel.  They are added down a few posts if you want to look at them.

Travis got me up at 5 am this morning to take him down to Driver's Ed.  He is doing his road testing this week.  The girl he is partnered with is blind in one eye and he said she is having a hard time.  Makes me a little nervous.  I'll be glad when he is done and safe.

MORP 2010

Travis went to MORP last weekend with Ashley M.  He said he had a great time!  Ashley asked him with muffins and Reeses Pieces and a note that said, "Travis, I'd fall to "PIECES" if a stud "MUFFIN" like you would go to MORP with me."

He answered by freezing his answer in a block of ice and then frosting it and decorating with Skittles.  I'm not sure if she had the patience to wait for it to melt or if she busted it up to find the answer.

The theme of the dance was "famous couples"  Travis didn't want to dress up, so they just did T-shirts.  He wanted to go as Doug and Carrie from "King of Queens", so that is who they had on their shirts.  They went laser tagging where they boys beat the girls, then they went to dinner at some Pirate Pizza place in Orem and then to the dance which was held at the driving range at the high school (cars, not golf, I was confused for a minute about it).

I'm excited I finally got to use this We Are Skyhawks kit I made ages ago.  I've been waiting for a fun school activity with photos that I could use it with.

More layouts

I forgot to say that I hosted a speed scrap on Saturday.  It was fun!  My instructions were a little challenging, but the layouts all turned out awesome and I think most of them learned something new!

May Date with Tyrel - Part I and Part II

Last night, after Travis and Trevin left, Tyrel and I went to town and bought movie snacks.  We came home and watched a movie together.  I love watching movies with him cuz he will still cuddle with is mom when we watch movies together.

Then today, he wanted to go on a hike.  We wanted to go to Big Tree, but after numerous phone calls to find out where the trail started on the Loafer Canyon side, we didn't have any luck.  Plus, Brother Howell said that he saw fresh bear tracks up there last week when he was turkey hunting, so we chickened out.  We will have to go sometime though.

Instead we went to The Grotto.  There was tons of water coming out of there.  I've never been this early in the Spring before.  Usually we have gone late in the Summer when there is still a waterfall, but not a WATERFALL!  Then we drove to Maple Lake and skipped rocks (disturbed the fishermen).  Tyrel has been awesome at skipping rocks since he was a little tiny kid.  He had a couple that skipped 15ish times.  It was amazing.  He knows just the right rocks to pick.  We ate Doritos and M&Ms on the way down the canyon.  I know, not very nutritous, but we had fun!

Hershey Track Meet - MORP

Trevin had his Hershey track meet today.  It was supposed to be earlier in the week, but they postponed it because of the weather. 

They picked a good day to have it.  Warm but not too hot.  I stayed through all of his events and then brought him home.  He did the 200 meter, the 400 meter, and the softball throw.

He didn't want to spend the day there.  I think all of the boys have come home once they were done with their events.  Apparently no track stars in the Nielsen family.

When we got back, Sean and I went to lunch for our Friday date.  It was fun to go out with him.  I love that we have that tradition.

Trevin is going to play night games with his friends tonight and Travis is gone to MORP.  So I think Tyrel and I are going to have a movie date!

Heroes

My wonderful Aunt sent me this picture of my grandpa Evers.  He was in the Army (1942) and then later in the Air Force.  I talked with my dad and he said there wasn't an Air Force when my grandpa first went into the military service.  That's why he was in both.

My Grandpa Richardson was also in the Army and my dad was in the Air Force.  I have lots of uncles and great uncles that also served this country in the military.  I'm grateful for all they did to allow me to enjoy the freedom I have and I'm grateful for those still serving today.  I'll add the picture of my other grandpa when I get the layout done.

My Predictions Were Right!

Way back on American Idol when there was a top 12, I predicted Lee, Casey and Crystal as the final three, and I was right!  They are the final three.  I was even able to watch the show tonight because I didn't have young women's.  It was kinda sad seeing them out my kitchen window all arriving at Sister Clark's for the activity tonight.  But, I'm ready for a change too. 

Sister Adams brought over the scout stuff to me this afternoon.  They have the Bears and Wolves together currently.  Not exactly sure how that works as they have pretty much totally different requirements.  I hope they separate them.  I guess they have been mostly working on belt loops, which would be the same for both of them, but belt loops are not required, so I think it is sad that they aren't working on their advancements.  Hopefully they get them separated.  Kelly, my co-scout leader is out of town this week, so next week we will have to get things planned and start having our den meetings.  It will be interesting!

Trevin and Tyrel went swimming for their scouts tonight.  Trevin apparently got some water in his mouth and then panicked and started sinking.  Thanks to those who saved him.  I guess that means we need to put him in swimming lessons again this year.  Tyrel said the pool they went to was awesome!  It was in the home of someone in Woodland Hills and apparently is an olympic sized swimming pool.  Wow!

New kit and my detective skills (or lack thereof)

I've spent most of the day today working on a new digital scrapbooking kit we have coming out in August.  It is called Surf's up and has an Earthy beachy feel to it.  I'm loving it!  I created lots of fun and unique elements for it that have never been in any of our other kits and it was kinda fun! 

I also have been spending some time trying to find a picture of my dad in his military uniform.  I emailed my mom, she said she only remembers seeing him once in his uniform before they were married and doesn't have a picture

I emailed my aunt and this is what she had to say
Lori - Your Dad was a pain in the pa-tooty when it came to him and his uniform. If there was ever a picture of him in his uniform it would be something I'd like to see - did you ask your Mom? I'll lay odds that he never had one taken. Other than your Mom - none of us ever saw your Dad in his dress uniform. You'll have to ask him why because I don't know.
When he came home after basic training in Texas it was around Christmas time (if I remember right) - we were all so excited that he was coming home. His plane didn't get in until late evening. We all went out to Stapleton Airport to pick him up, but, no Bob on the flight he was suppose to be on. We waited around, looked every where. In those days there was no cell phones so we had no idea if he was actually on the plane or not - as military flew standby.

Disappointed we drove home to Boulder and hoped we would hear that he would be coming the next day. Well that stinker was at the airport the whole time! He didn't want us to see him in his uniform so some how he snuck by us into the bathroom to change. In order for him to fly standby he had to wear his uniform. We no more walked in the door and the phone was ringing and it was him. So we all jumped back in the car and headed back to the airport. I think we were all just so excited that he was home that he got off easy on his little escapade........

So that's the story of your Dad and his uniform. I've never seen a picture with him in it - and don't know if he ever had one taken
 
I talked with my dad and he said he thinks they took one when he was at basic training and if they did, he sent it back to his mom, my grandma.
 
I talked with grandma and she said she doesn't remember ever seeing a picture from him.
 
I emailed the military bases where he did his basic training and his schooling and they said they don't archive photos by name that far back (I guess I should have decided to be a detective a long time ago instead of waiting till now)
 
So, I guess I'm pretty much out of luck and it makes me sad that there isn't a known photo in existence.  Kinda frustrating since I would love to do a layout of him in uniform for my kids scrapbooks. 
 
On the bright side, I do have photos of both of my grandfathers so I will be putting them in layouts!

Why I'm a Scrapaholic

Here is what the journaling says

I love watching my kids look through their books that I’ve made them. Even . though they are at that age where they don’t love getting their picture taken, they will be glad someday that they let me!

I have loved participating in the My Life challenge this year. I always just scrapped the big events like holidays and sporting events, but now I am scrapping our everyday lives and I am loving it!

I set a goal this year to scrapbook 52 recipes (one per week). When I’m done, I’m going to get them all bound in a book to give to my boys to give to their wiives so the family recipes can be handed down to future generations.

I taught a digi-scrap class to a bunch of my friends and neighbors online and I am also teaching a community education class on digi-scrapping at the high school. I love being able to share my hobby with others.

It has been so much fun being able to design with Heidi. Even though we live far away from each other, we have been able to share this interest with each other and talk on a daily basis. I’ve loved strengthening our friendship!

I loved writing in my journal when I was younger and I got out of that habit when I got married. I know it is important and scrapbooking gives me a way to be able to keep family history and share my feelings about important events as well as everyday life.

I’m usually not really creative, but with cooking and scrapbooking, I feel I can share my talent with others and it is something I love.

I have made so many new online friends and some I have even met in real life. I love these ladies and the fun we have together during speed scraps .

My photography skills have increased vastly and I love taking pictures all the time. I wish my boys would be cooperative subjects more often!

I love challenges and learning new skills and I love that I have been able to keep fairly up to date with my photos.

Mother's Day

We woke up and got ready for church.  I got released from my calling in Young Women's today.  I'm going to miss the girls, but I've been in there for 3 1/2 years, so I guess it is time for a change.  My new calling is as a cub scout leader with Kelly.  It will be fun to work with her!  I've never been in Scouts before, but I have 3 boys that have been through it, so it should be a fun change.

When we got home from church, Sean fixed me lunch.  I think that is the first mother's day meal he has ever made me and it took a little prompting.  He made BBQ'd chicken, baked potatoes and green beans.  It was yummy!

I worked with Travis on his answer for his MORP date and made brownies for dessert for the family get together.  I called and talked with my mom and tried to call my grandma but just got voicemail, so I left her a message and also sent her an email.  I also got my annual mother's day pictures taken with my boys.

We went down to Diane and LaMarr's for dinner.  It was fun visiting and laughing with everyone.  We had BBQd chicken, salads (oh so yummy), rolls, and then brownies, ice cream and hot fudge sauce for dessert.  I also got a picture of Sean with his mom.  It was a great mother's day!

Girls Day again!

Whew, what a busy day!  I set my alarm for 6:45 because there was a speed scrap at 7 am.  I did tell you I was addicted right?  It was a great way to start the day.  After it was over, I made breakfast for the family and then hurried and got my house chores done.  I didn't fnish laundry, but did get a couple of loads done and the kitchen and bathrooms cleaned as well as my bedroom.  Then, I took off for Salt Lake with Sharlynn and Traci.  Lisa was getting us into the 50-80% off Scholastic book sale.  So we met up with Lisa, Haylee and Carolyn and we spent 2 hours looking through the warehouse finding books.  We ended up with 2 boxes full between us all and then we got our picture taken with our stash and Clifford, the big red dog.  After the sale, we headed to Applebees for lunch.  It was so fun to visit and laugh and bond.  We really need to make this a monthly event.  It is so fun!  So, I did April, Lisa did May.  Who wants to volunteer for June? 

When I got back home, I caught up on my emails, did another load of laundry and then made kettle corn and watched Space Jam with Tyrel and Trevin.  Travis was gone with his friends making a movie.  He got home around 8:30. 

At about 9:30, our doorbell rang and on the doorstep was an invite for Travis to go to MORP.  He is really excited to go because he has gone to other dances with the same general group of girls and done other things with them before and they are a really fun bunch!  His date is just with one of them, but the big group will be similar to other times he has gone.  Anyway, he will have to work on his answer tomorrow, it's too late tonight to do anything.

Kick It

Trevin had another soccer game tonight.  He came really close to scoring 2 different goals.  He also got bowled over by a couple other players.  It looked like a really hard fall, but he jumped right back up and kept playing.

We kinda had book club tonight.  There were only 4 of us there and only 2 of us had read the book.  But, it was fun to get out with the girls and chit chat about various things.

I'm grateful that Spring soccer is almost over.  I've been freezing my behind off at the games this year.  There has only been one warm one.

I'm also glad that this week has been mostly warm.  Sean has been busy and that is good!

Hope of America

Trevin's 5th Grade Hope of America concert was tonight.  We had to be there at 6:15 and it didn't start until 7:30.  It wasn't too bad, I took a book to read and Travis and Tyrel walked around the Marriott Center 7 or 8 times trying to find cute girls.  My favorite song was the very last one that they do with flashlights called "We Can Be A Light".  It chokes me up every time for some reason.  I didn't love the other entertainment they had this year so well.  They usually have dance groups that represent a lot of different cultures in between the songs that the kids sing, but this year it wasn't as diverse and I didn't care for it.  I would have been fine with just listening to the kids sing. 

It took us 1/2 hour to get out of the parking lot when it was over, not so fun..

Cleaning the Church is fun to do

For Family Home Evening tonight, we went and cleaned the church.  The Martin's were also there to help us along with Sister Ross.  Wow, Sister Ross has this calling of hers down to a fine science. There was no delay, she knew what she wanted everyone to do and she put us all to work right away.  Sean had to vacuum the floor and all the benches in the chapel to start with, then he mopped the kitchen and all the bathrooms.  My first job was to polish all the wood in the chapel, then I started vacuuming classrooms until I met up with Sister Martin who had started vacuuming classrooms on the other side.  The Primary room took me forever.  I know it's a big room, but it seemed 5 times bigger while I was vacuuming.  My last job was emptying all the garbages in all the classrooms. Sister Martins other job was to clean all the chalkboard trays.  Brother Martin vacuumed the overflow area and all the halls and foyers.  Travis' first job was to sweep the entire gym while Trevin dusted all the pianos, the organ, and all the artwork in the building.  Then both of them started cleaning all the windows.  They had to clean the entrances inside and out and then all the windows in the classroom doors.  Tyrel had lots of jobs.  He started with cleaning all the chalkboards in the building.  Then he put up all the chairs that weren't up so we could vacuum.  Next he cleaned all the metal plates that are in the doorways going into the gym.  He also swept out all of the entrances and the sidewalks at each entrance.  I know there were more, but I can't remember what they were, so I'll have to ask him next time I see him and update this.  They all worked hard and we were pretty much exhausted when we were done after two full hours.  I can't believe Sister Ross (who has to be in her 70s) does this twice a week.  It is her calling to organize cleaners, but she works right along side everyone on Saturday and Monday every week.  She is awesome.  She cleaned the kitchen and all the bathrooms as well as gave all of us jobs and instructions.  We came home and had banana splits for dessert, read our scriptures, said family prayer and went to bed.

Are you all sick of me bragging about Elder Reynolds yet?  Well, here I go again.  The missionaries came to our ward today with Wes, who was the appointment Travis went on with them the other night.  It was fast and testimony meeting and was a really good meeting.  Elder Reynolds bore his testimony and I wrote down this that he said, "Joy is not temporal, joy is spiritual and eternal."  Isn't that a great quote?!  I love it.  There were many more testimonies that were awesome and Wes even bore his testimony.  Our lesson in Young Women's was given by Lucia and it was on Sharing the Gospel, so it fit right in with everything in Sacrament meeting too.  I'm so glad Travis has had this experience and also all of the other youth in our ward that have shared their testimonies and been great examples to Wes.  It sounds like he is getting baptized on May 20th.  Our ward is awesome!

Old Enough To Shave

Last night, Tyrel decided he needed to shave, so he came up looking for some shaving cream. He did a pretty good job until the end, when he sneezed, and cut his lip.  Live and learn.....

Today we just did our regular Saturday house cleaning.  Trevin went to his cousing Kaiden's house for his birthday party.  Then we all went to Grandpa and Grandma Nielsen's for a BBQ.
